Join us Monday nights at 7 pm for music that brought the Commonwealth together in its dire wartime struggle… and helped to shape the Mod Generation to come.
The Hearts & Minds Department covers music from the World Wars, as well as the turbulent inter-war period- a time of deprivation, loss, raucous celebration and above all, endurance.
Hosted by Nick Goodfrey, this hour long broadcast will educate as well as entertain, interweaving historic events, singer and songwriter facts and excerpts from the era’s newspapers, journals and letters with songs that helped our ancestors to ‘keep calm and carry on’ ‘until the fight was won.’ Throughout each broadcast, you will hear fascinating tidbits about the stories behind the Entertainment National Service Association – the real Hearts & Minds Department which became a dedicated office of MI-5 after the war. Listen to the trials and tribulations of artists and agents both, as they struggled to maintain their own spirits- and those of the Home Guard, the Boys Abroad, and everyone in between- in the face of totalitarianism, incredible violence and war.
